The superb grounds of the School, set against the magnificent backdrop of Lichfield Cathedral, provide an inspirational setting for a multitude of sporting activities.
All children participate in structured curriculum PE lessons, receiving above the nationally expected 2 hours per week from Year 3 upwards. Games activities follow the major games of rugby, football and cricket for the boys and hockey, netball and rounders for girls. We have exclusive use of Lichfield Hockey and Cricket Club All home hockey games are played on AstroTurf from Year 4, further supporting our link between School and club membership.
Fixtures are played against schools within a one hour radius of the Cathedral, allowing both private and local state competition to flourish. While fixtures are played predominantly in the weekday afternoons, we continue to play host to a range of touring teams which further add to our developing Saturday morning fixture programme.
Athletics and cross-country running and swimming have become our major representative sports; becoming the centre piece to a bustling House System running from Year 1 to Year 13. A wide variety of other activities, such as trampolining, tennis, handball, badminton, gymnastics and dance are also included in the curriculum. Having had a number of Cathedral School pupils representing England or Great Britain in judo, rounders and boxing in the past, we regularly supply Staffordshire with footballers, cricketers, hockey players and runners competing at county, district and national level.
For the past three years we have aided the advanced Academy development of young footballers, offering agreed timetables with West Bromwich Albion and Walsall Football Clubs. This has led to our Elite Sports Programme where our top sports students are supported in their progression towards professional level through discussion of topics such as dealing with the media and the impact of diet and drugs on health and performance.
