Alex and the West Brom U16 team triumph in Thailand

15 year old Alex's summer included a trip to Thailand as part of West Brom’s U16s squad, to participate in a tournament against Thai club sides and a representative All Stars team aged between 16 and 18.

Funded and sponsored by a consortium of Thai businesses, the tournament is part of a programme aimed at providing Thai youth players with international club competition in order to benchmark some of the countries best youth players. It is hoped the programme will ultimately provide more Thai youth players with opportunities to join clubs in foreign leagues, such as the Premier League and provide better players to the Thailand national team and so help future qualification to the World Cup. Football is big news in Thailand, with Premier League games shown live all over the country and, of course, Leicester City have Thai owners in King Power.

West Brom U16s clinched the tournament title with three straight wins and then won the final match of the tour against a Thailand All Stars team. Alex gained experience of international competition, a live television press conference and coaching sessions with local players.  Alex commented that the Thai people were warm, welcoming, generous and friendly, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable and one he will never forget.
