Sport

We see the teaching of skills in a wide variety of sports as an essential foundation for pupils’ long-term development of a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, we combine a ‘sport for all’ philosophy with the promotion and pursuit of excellence. The aim is to unlock the potential of every pupil by offering a range of experiences and opportunities, including the chance to represent their School.

 Sport medals

Through sport, pupils learn about teamwork, reliability and commitment. Inter-House and inter-school matches provide experience of success and defeat, joy and disappointment. Mature young people need to be able to cope with all of these with both generosity and grace. We are proud of our record of sporting achievement and count Olympians among our alumni. Several students represent the School in county, regional and national teams.

The superb grounds of the School, set against the magnificent backdrop of Lichfield Cathedral and at our Longdon campus, provide an inspirational setting for a multitude of sporting activities. All pupils participate in structured curriculum PE lessons. Pupils engage in rugby, football, hockey, tennis, rounders, netball and cricket, along with swimming, cross-country, athletics, orienteering, archery, table tennis, mountain biking, climbing, dance and much more.

We have inspiring formal partnerships with Lichfield Sports Club and Beacon Park Tennis which provides access to professional facilities on our doorstep. Competitive fixtures and tournaments are predominantly played in weekday afternoons, with only occasional weekend fixtures.

In recognition of sporting achievement, pupils can be awarded Sport Scholarships, Sports Exhibitions, Full Colour and Half Colours.

Elite Sports Programme

We champion our elite sports students by offering a customised timetable to accommodate individual coaching and international travel, alongside a bespoke programme of masterclasses with experts in sport, performance and nutrition and inspirational visits to professional facilities. This includes students taking part in non-curriculum sports such as golf, martial arts, dance and equestrian sports.
