TT Rockstars triumph

Year 3 and 4 pupils (and staff!) dressed as rock stars for another Times Tables event last week. They enjoyed an orienteering activity around the School grounds, answering lots of times table-based questions to unscramble a secret word.

Inspired by Kandinsky

This term, Year 2 have started to look at different artists who were alive or born during the Victorian times. We have begun this topic by looking at the Russian painter, Wassily Kandinsky. We found out how he loved to paint whilst listening to music and he felt that if he painted in shape and colour, rather than painting objects, he could become a more honest painter and paint his true feelings. We have learned about warm colours and cool hues, alongside looking at earthly colours and heavenly colours. It has been fascinating to learn about him and we hope you like the children's work based upon his Concentric Circles.

International Organ Day

On Saturday 20 April, some of our students pulled out all the stops and joined Will (Year 12) and Liam Condon at St John's without Barrs Chapel for International Organ Day. The aim of the day was to inspire non-organists to learn to play and seek out organ music. There were demonstrations and chances for people to get their fingers and their feet moving on the organ.

Acting Awards

Congratulations to Poppy (Year 6) for winning two acting awards at the LCA Academy Lichfield awards ceremony at the weekend.

Successful Choir Tour

Senior Choristers, Choral Scholars and Lay Vicars from the Cathedral Choir, together with Mr Lamb and Mr Rawles, took part in the first choir tour in six years, travelling to Ireland. The tour started in Dublin at St Patrick's Cathedral where two services and a lunchtime recital were performed and greatly appreciated by all who attended. We then travelled onto Cobh where we were greeted by Storm Kathleen. We finished the tour singing morning Eucharist and Evensong at St Fin Barr's Cathedral, Cork where between services we were kindly treated to wonderful hospitality and a delicious lunch provided by St Fin Barrs. The music performed was outstanding from all who took part and was incredibly well received by everyone who attended the services and recital. The Choristers and Choral Scholars were wonderful ambassadors for both their school and Cathedral, and many compliments were received. Life long memories were made and the staff who accompanied the trip were left feeling extremely proud of not only the high quality singing during the week, but of how the students looked after and cared for each other during our week away.

Busy Easter for Cathedral Choir

The Cathedral Choir had a particularly busy Easter this year, with rehearsals, a concert in Birmingham and services throughout Holy Week, egg-hunting fun on Easter Day in the Palace grounds, followed by a tour to Ireland. Senior Choristers, Choral Scholars and Lay Vicars, together with Director of Music Ben Lamb joined organist Thomas Trotter at Birmingham Town Hall on Monday March 25th to perform a lunchtime concert. They performed seven pieces which included G Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, Gloria and Agnes Dei by WA Mozart’s and W Byrd’s Sing Joyfully. The concert was extremely well received and was an amazing experience for all who took part.

Careers Talk for Year 10

Before Easter, the Year 10 students listened to an interesting and very informative talk from Mrs Chanel Crocker from Howardson Group. She discussed the importance of selling yourself effectively when applying for a job, and provided the students with interesting examples of well-constructed applications compared to poor examples. Students were also given an excellent insight into the role of a Human Resources Manager.

Pirate Day – ahoy!

Pre-Reception recently enjoyed a brilliant Pirate Day. We baked biscuits and made grog (orange cordial) for a pirate feast. We also walked the plank and played pirate games outside.

Netball vs St Dominic’s

The Year 9 and 10 girls played in a final netball fixture of the term vs St Dominic’s Grammar School on home ground down in Beacon Park. The Year 9 team led in their game right from the start; they took majority of the possession throughout the game with short quick passes to ensure the ball was moving around the court. Captained by Leni, they were able to defend consistently and continue to their attacking D. They led into half time 5-4. The game continued to ebb and flow for both teams engaging in end-to-end play. The final score saw LCS secure the win 9-7. Player of the Match: Holly W. Team: Leni, Holly, Izzy, Charlotte, Luella, Gracie and Nicola.

The Year 10 girls worked hard in a very close game with the opposition. There was some excellent defending by Elizabeth and Michelle, along with some good shooting from Megan and Lily. Their game also swung back and forth in terms of which team lead was leading. Unfortunately, St Dominic’s just had the edge and the final score was 7-9 to St Dominic’s. Player of the Match: Maliah. Team: Megan, Georgia, Maliah, Michelle, Charlotte, Natalie, Lily, Elizabeth and Imogen.

Year 3 Desert Island Discs

In a remarkable display of talent and dedication, Year 3 recently presented an awe-inspiring performance that brought to life the legendary journey of Winston Churchill. From his early school days to his triumphant return as Prime Minister in 1951, the pupils showcased their exceptional skills and delivered Churchill's iconic speeches with remarkable precision and passion.

The performance began with a vivid portrayal of Churchill's early school days. With meticulous attention to detail, the pupils recreated the atmosphere of his childhood, highlighting the challenges he faced and the determination that shaped his character. One of the most captivating parts of the performance was the portrayal of Churchill's leadership during World War II. The pupils brought to life the tension and uncertainty of the war, emphasizing Churchill's unwavering resolve and his ability to unite a nation in the face of adversity. The pupils flawlessly delivered Churchill's iconic speeches, evoking a sense of patriotism and determination. We all enjoyed the outstanding performances from the suffragettes, evacuees and interviewers, as well as the elderly Churchills reflecting back on their life. To top it off, the pupils sang a wonderful mix of Music Hall and wartime songs.

Silver Expedition battles extreme weather

In early April, a group of Year 11 students successfully completed the expedition element of their Duke ofEdinburgh Award Scheme Silver Award. Mr Gardiner and Mrs Bent were delighted by the performance, enthusiasm and teamwork demonstrated by the candidates during challenging conditions. "All of the candidates were amazing, particularly given it was probably about minus 5 at some points on Monday daytime (with the wind chill effect)," said Mr Gardiner.
