Minster Hall official opening

LOCAL MP OPENS NEW PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE IN LICHFIELD

Dave Robertson MP was the guest of honour at the official opening of Lichfield Cathedral School’s new Performing Arts Centre at Minster Hall in Lichfield on Friday 18 October. The Labour MP for Lichfield toured the new facility that includes a theatre, several music classrooms equipped with keyboards and composition software, a rehearsal space and a recording studio.

During his visit, students at the School showcased their talents in drama, singing, as instrumentalists and in music production.  Mr Robertson commented: “What a fantastic space Lichfield Cathedral School has managed to create.  The performances were excellent and a credit to the pupils and staff.”

Headteacher Sue Hannam talked to Mr Robertson about the School’s award-winning MusicShare programme which encourages singing in junior, senior and special schools across the West Midlands.  “Our partnership work with schools in the region has resulted in more than 30,000 children benefitting from expert tuition in singing, the opportunity to perform in professional venues, and a wealth of free music resources to support continued singing.  This project, which we run in conjunction with Lichfield Cathedral and the Music Partnership, is one of the largest in the UK and demonstrates that, as a centre of musical excellence, Lichfield surpasses expectations at a national level.  Music making brings such joy and inspiration to the lives of children, it is vital that projects such as MusicShare are supported.”

At the end of his visit, Mr Robertson said: “It was a pleasure to see the work they are undertaking and I am very interested to hear about MusicShare and all the work that’s going on to develop creative arts across the constituency and further afield.”
